The Allen Institute for AI (commonly known as AI2) is a Seattle-based nonprofit research organization, established in 2014 by the late Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen. Its mission is to drive breakthrough, open, and trustworthy artificial intelligence research aimed at solving some of the world’s most pressing problems. AI2 emphasizes an open-first philosophy, releasing models, datasets, and evaluation tools to empower researchers, developers, and institutions to build upon their work. Their projects span multiple domains—from language models (e.g., OLMo, Tülu, Molmo) and robotics to environmental AI systems (EarthRanger, Skylight) and scientific discovery platforms (Semantic Scholar, ScholarQA).
